Today I thought of making a sewing basket for my mom's personalized '50s My Twinn doll. I wrote a list of all of the things I was going to put in it (most of them, we already have):
* A miniature basket (I was going to line it with retro fabric)
* Mini thread on wooden spools
* Buttons
* Miniature scissors
* Pincushion
* Tape measure
* Fabric s c r a p s
I told her about my idea, and she said: "I don't think I used to hand sew when I was young" (she always wants miniatures to be things she really had/did). "How about a knitting basket? I used to knit Granny Squares as a Girl Scout."
So now I'm planning on taking the miniature basket I have, lining it, and filling it with knitting supplies, like:
* Little balls of yarn
* Knitting needles (made by cutting real ones in half (for the 1/2 scale of My Twinn) and sharpening the ends in a pencil sharpener). For an American Girl, cut 2/3 off, keeping 1/3 of the end with the knob on it.
* Miniature scissors
I wanted to pass along this idea, because it might be fun for other dolls to get a sewing or knitting basket for Christmas! (Just leave out the scissors for little girls or dolls who like to run with scissors! )

You can get 0000 steel knitting needles in sets of 5 at Patternworks.com on a shorter version (5 inches or so)
If you glue a bead at the end of the needle they become a "mini". I use them for miniature beaded knitting.
Another solution is toothpicks with a bead at the end. I even knitted a whole "micro-mini" sweater with the toothpick needles!
If you use size 10 crochet thread or sports weight yarn, it is more or less in scale with the girls.
Have fun!!!

Ana, believe it or not--I've done the toothpick idea, using little seed beads on the ends! You are more talented and dexterous than I am--I had to cheat by doing the knitting on larger needles. There are a couple of photos here:
